Tartarian Gate is an Atlantean Mythic Age god power in Age of Mythology that is available to worshipers of Hekate. When the god power is invoked, it summons a building named Tartarian Gate that destroys other buildings at the point of invoking and starts spawning hostile Tartarian Spawns.
Gameplay
When placing the Tartarian Gate, all buildings in the target area are instantly destroyed. It cannot overlap with Settlements and Wonders. Before Retold, it also could not overlap with the "Gaia Lush" generated by an enemy player worshiping Gaia. When invoked, it creates The Tartarian Gate building which spawns up to seven Tartarian Spawns, powerful myth units that are hostile to all players. They will attack any units and buildings except the Gate itself. Any Tartarian Spawn that are killed will be replaced by the Gate. The Tartarian Spawns attack units of any player, so Tartarian Gate should not be used in the middle of an attack. Instead, it should be used prior to an attack as the enemy will be greatly weakened after fighting off all the Tartarian Spawns.
When an opponent invokes a Tartarian Gate, the player can use any large group of military units to destroy it quickly, rather than wait for siege or strong melee units. Before Retold, this was true even with archers, as the structure had both low melee armor and low pierce armor.
Mythology
"Tartarus was a prison and holding pen for creatures distasteful to the reigning gods. When Oranos ruled the cosmos he locked many of his ill-begotten children in the depths of Tartarus. When the Olympians rose to power they threw the deposed Titans into Tartarus and bound them there with gates wrought of adamantine. The Titans spent millennia trying to find ways out of their prison, often enlisting mortals to free them."
In-game compendium
Building
"Until destroyed, this gate will continually spawn creatures hostile to all."
In-game description
The Tartarian Gate is created where the god power is invoked. A skull-shaped structure erupts from under the ground and opens its jaws, revealing a fiery portal that periodically creates a Tartarian Spawn. As per the quote, the Tartarian Gate will continue to exist and create additional Tartarian Spawn unless it is destroyed. The ground under the gate will remain cracked and burned even after destruction, and permanently cannot be built upon.
