Gameplay
Much like his predecessor Hathor, Sobek's bonuses are mainly defensive. Sun-dried Mud-brick increases the hit points of the player's buildings (including Titan Gates) and reduces their construction time (excluding towers and Titan Gates). This not only helps buildings last longer, but also allows forward bases to be built more quickly. The gold a player saves from the technology can be used for other things, including amassing military and myth units and researching other technologies. Dark Water grants Camel Riders and Camel Caravans increased hit points and the ability to regenerate, allowing them to last longer. This is especially important for Camel Caravans due to their tendency to get raided by enemies. Dark Water can additionally be supplemented with Osiris in the Mythic Age, as the latter provides further improvements to Camel Riders. Likewise, Dark Water pairs well with Thoth's Valley of the Kings technology, allowing the player to mass produce self-regenerating Camel Riders. The combined Camel Rider bonuses of Sobek and Osiris are strongest under Ra, as he provides extra hit points to Camel Riders, making them incredibly durable and fast in comparison to the Camel Riders of other gods with all three gods' bonuses applied. Solar Barque grants the player's Kebenits an advantage in naval warfare by allowing them to spawn Sea Snakes near their targets. Under Isis, it is possible to turn the tide in a heated naval battle with the Plague of Serpents god power if Anubis was picked for the Classical Age - Anubis' Plague of Serpents, together with Sobek's Solar Barque, can spawn enough Sea Snakes to help overwhelm an enemy navy.
On the other hand, Sobek's god power, Locust Swarm, is purely offensive against an enemy player's economy and can be used to send hundreds of units of food and wood (gold if used on an Egyptian player's Farms) down the drain, forcing the enemy player to scramble to get their economy functional again.
Sobek has two myth units. The first is the Petsuchos, which, being slow and having a high pierce attack as well as decent divine attack, excels at defense and destroying buildings and other units from afar with its damage over time effect. His second myth unit, the Roc, is the game's only flying transport unit, and can be used in several ways to give the player tactical advantages.
Mythology
"A mysterious and often obscure deity, Sobek is a son of the trickster god Set and the creation goddess Neith. This led to a multidimensional personality in Egyptian cult and belief systems; while Sobek was most closely associated with monarchical power and fierce defense against the dangers of the world, he also had a darker side. He was known for ferocious aggression, thievery, lechery, and violence. In a way, this collection of qualities can cause Sobek to be seen as a personification of the survival instinct; in another, it can be seen as reflective of the Nile crocodile, a fierce and territorial species that ancient Egyptians regarded with both fear and respect. After all, this species was immeasurably old even when Egyptian civilization was quite young. Sobek's main cult center was at Faiyum, which the Greeks knew as Crocodilopolis."
In-game compendium
Trivia
- His beta portrait might be based on his Age of Empires: Mythologies counterpart's, sporting a similar pose and two pyramids in the background.
- In the compendium and minor god selection screen, Sobek's name is listed as "Sobek (Hathor)". If the player has purchased the Legacy Deity Portraits Pack and then activates it in-game, Hathor will take Sobek's place, although this is a cosmetic change.
