In-game description
Ragnarok is a Norse Mythic Age god power in Age of Mythology that is available to worshipers of Baldr. When invoked, it converts all of the player's Gatherers and Dwarves into Heroes of Ragnarok.
Gameplay
Heroes of Ragnarok are similar to the regular Norse heroes, Hersirs, in that they are infantry units with a large attack bonus against myth units. Ragnarok is often used to exterminate a player rapidly. In addition, the Heroes of Ragnarok, while powerful against myth units, are not as effective against human soldiers. So unless the enemies are going heavy on myth units, have few soldiers, or are sending Titans against the player it should not be used.
However, there is a high cost, as the player's economy will be greatly interrupted since it turns all worker type units into heroes. Ragnarok is useful in the late game when there is a surplus of resources and population room is more valuable. Still, it may be wise to invest in numerous Fishing Ships (on water maps) and Ox Caravans before invoking so that the player can still gather food and gold, respectively. Owning a Plenty Vault can also keep the player's economy alive.
Trivia
- In Norse mythology, Ragnarok was believed to be the end of the world when the gods and the giants would fight a long bloody battle over the Earth.
- Even if the player is using another civilization and has obtained Ragnarok by any means available (cheats or Scenario Editor), it will still turn their villagers into heroes if invoked.
- Before Retold, when players invoke this god power, villagers are randomly turned into 1 of 3 variants of Hero of Ragnarok: male human, female human, or dwarf. In Retold, Dwarves become the dwarf version of the hero, while Gatherers are randomly transformed into the male or female human version of the hero.
- When this god power is invoked, all resources carried by villagers will be automatically deposited into the player's stockpiles as they convert into Heroes of Ragnarok.
