Strengths

Poseidon focuses on cavalry.

Both Stables and cavalry units are cheaper, allowing cavalry to be massed quickly. Poseidon also has access to all the minor gods with technologies that further strengthen his cavalry, making them especially dangerous in prolonged games. A further military bonus is defensive - when destroyed, Poseidon's buildings spawn Militias. This makes opponents' early game rushes more difficult, while also possibly providing offensive units for free. He is also the only God in the game to have a naval Hero, the Argo; this makes aquatic myth units less troublesome. Furthermore, the Lord of Horses technology improves the Hippeus's poor line of sight, and makes the Prodromos an even better unit at scouting ahead. Poseidon also grants a boost to aquatic scouting with the Hippocampus.

To add to this formidable list of bonuses, the player also gains an economic bonus in that the use of a Market costs only 10%.

Weaknesses

Until the Physician was introduced in the Extended Edition, Poseidon worshipers had no means to heal their units who would wear out over the course of numerous battles. The Militia that spawn from destroyed buildings are not as strong as the more common Greek soldiers. Their sudden appearance can use up valuable population, preventing the player from training preferred units in an important fight. Poseidon's unique cavalry unit, the Hetairos, is not as strong when compared to those of Zeus or Hades. Siege Units and strong Myth Units such as the Colossus are better suited for tearing down buildings. On treaty maps, the Lure god power is often of little use to no use, as most huntables will not spawn within the gamemode.

Mythology

"The third son of Kronos and the brother of Zeus and Hades, he drew the seas as his domain to rule. He was known also as the god earthquakes and the god of horses. The symbols most often associated with Poseidon were the trident and dolphin. Sailors relied upon him for favorable winds and safe voyages, but he was moody. Despite sacrifices including drowned horses, he could cause storms, bad winds, and earthquakes at a whim. Like Zeus, he projected his power and masculinity on women, fathering many children. In a famous contest between himself and Athena to decide which of the two would be the patron god of Athens, he threw a spear into the ground to create the Spring of the Acropolis. Athena surpassed him, however, by creating the olive tree. He often used water and earthquakes to exact revenge, but could be cooperative as well. He greatly aided the Greeks in the Trojan War, but took years of revenge on Odysseus, who had harmed one of Poseidon's Cyclops offspring, Polyphemus."
