Gameplay
Anubis' improvements are offensive and improve Spearmen and favor generation. First, his Serpent Spear technology grants Spearmen venomous spears, granting them the ability to poison enemies and damage them over time. This makes Spearmen rather more dangerous. Second, Necropolis increases the rate at which monuments generate Favor, allowing for the faster creation of myth units or research of myth technologies in all stages of a game. This is especially useful in tandem with Isis' monuments being able to generate favor faster when empowered.
As Anubis' myth unit, the Anubite, is relatively cheap already, large numbers can be fielded. His god power, Plague of Serpents, can be used defensively to get the player out of a sticky situation, or offensively in a rush, where they can be added to Anubites and upgraded Spearmen.
Followers of both Isis and Set can follow up with Nephthys in the Heroic Age to grant access to the Scorpion Man, a myth unit capable of poisoning adjacent units with a venomous stinger. This supplements the Spearmen's Serpent Spear-improved weaponry. As Anubis already benefits Spearmen, followers of Set who are fielding large numbers of Spearmen may also choose Horus for the Mythic Age, as his improvements make Spearmen all the deadlier and synergize nicely with Anubis' bonuses.
Mythology
"Usually depicted with the head of a jackal or as a black dog, Anubis was associated with funerary rites. His mother Nephthys had tricked Osiris, then ruler of Egypt, into giving her a son because she had no children by her evil husband Set. When Set overthrew Osiris, the baby Anubis was hidden in the Nile swamps to preserve him from Set's wrath. There he was found by Isis, who adopted him. When Osiris chose to go west to rule the underworld, Anubis performed the embalming with the help of Isis' magic. Prior to the rise of Osiris as ruler of the underworld, Anubis had been a principal guardian of the dead. Anubis carried on as a guardian under Osiris, guiding the dead to the site of judgment and helping to weigh their souls."
