When placing the Tartarian Gate, all buildings in the target area are instantly destroyed. It cannot overlap with Settlements and Wonders. Before Retold, it also could not overlap with the "Gaia Lush" generated by an enemy player worshiping Gaia. When invoked, it creates The Tartarian Gate building which spawns up to seven Tartarian Spawns, powerful myth units that are hostile to all players. They will attack any units and buildings except the Gate itself. Any Tartarian Spawn that are killed will be replaced by the Gate. The Tartarian Spawns attack units of any player, so Tartarian Gate should not be used in the middle of an attack. Instead, it should be used prior to an attack as the enemy will be greatly weakened after fighting off all the Tartarian Spawns.
There are many applications for this god power. If the player has spread their forces too thin, the Underworld Passage allows armies to be transported quickly to wherever they are needed. It can also be used to bypass an enemy's defenses and attack them where they are vulnerable. However, the player should be careful when placing it since if one of the Portals is destroyed the power is forfeited.

When an opponent invokes a Tartarian Gate, the player can use any large group of military units to destroy it quickly, rather than wait for siege or strong melee units. Before Retold, this was true even with archers, as the structure had both low melee armor and low pierce armor.
On maps like Archipelago, Team Migration, River Nile, and Islands, the Underworld Passage can become a very efficient and secure way to transport units between two islands or crossing the river, thus negating the need for Transport Ships. On maps like Jotunheim, where the map is divided by mountains and where there are only narrow chokepoints from where the players can invade each other's positions, Underworld Passage can be used for a sneak attack.

==Mythology==
It should be noted that Titans cannot pass through the Underworld Passage. Also, depending on the map and placement of each end of the Underworld Passage, Azure Dragons and War Salamanders can either choose to go into the Underworld Passage or bypass it altogether due to being amphibious myth units. If the Azure Dragons and War Salamanders are made to cross the body of water instead, the player will have more room for units to transport through the Underworld Passage.

A pair of Underworld Passages are created when the eponymous god power is invoked. These are regular structures that can be targeted and destroyed by enemies. The player or their allies can garrison their units in one Underworld Passage, which instantly transports and ungarrisons them at the other connected Underworld Passage. Further, rally points can be set at each Underworld Passage to move ungarrisoned units to a particular location or target object.
Any unit with a recharging special ability bar loses all charge when passing through the Underworld Passage. If one of a pair of Underworld Passages is destroyed, the other one falls as well. Flying units and Titans cannot enter an Underworld Passage; only other land units may.

Spawns a Tartarian Gate

Underworld Passage is a Greek Heroic Age god power in Age of Mythology that is available to worshipers of Apollo. When invoked, it creates two portals, called Underworld Passages, between two locations on the map. Units entering one are instantly transported to the other. Either end can be repaired by a Villager, but if one end is destroyed, the other one will also automatically destroy itself.

Gameplay

When an opponent invokes a Tartarian Gate, the player can use any large group of military units to destroy it quickly, rather than wait for siege or strong melee units. Before Retold, this was true even with archers, as the structure had both low melee armor and low pierce armor.
