The fastest archers in the game, Chariot Archers are the ultimate raiders as they are ranged, train very quickly and have a high attack. They have a small attack bonus against infantry, and are very versatile. In addition to being dangerous to infantry, they can outclass other archers with their higher hit points and greater firepower. Chariot Archers should still be kept out of harm's way as they are rather fragile. They work well with Camel Rider due to their complementary abilities. Chariot Archers can pick off infantry while Camelry take out any attacking cavalry or counter-archers that could threaten the fragile Chariot Archer. Since the two balance out each other's weaknesses they make a formidable, fast moving force. |
Hoplites are best used to counter cavalry units. However, in a skirmish, most cavalry units will simply be able to run away from them. Hoplites are quite versatile as they can defeat most other infantry units. However, like all infantry they are vulnerable to counter-infantry and ranged soldiers (except for Turmae). |
Hoplites are well armored, and, of the four standard infantry units, they have the most hit points - far more than the [[Spearman]] and [[Berserk]]. However, they are also the most expensive, slowest, and have the longest training time. This makes rushing with them more difficult, except for Zeus players, whose Hoplites move faster and do extra damage to buildings. |

{{Quote|For about 500 years prior to 1200 BC, the chariot archer dominated the battlefields of the Middle East and Western India. The chariot, and indeed horses, were unknown to Egypt before 1720 BC when they were invaded by the Hyksos. The Egyptians were quick to adopt the new technology, and the chariot remained the elite shock troop of Egypt for hundreds of years. All the great civilizations of the time, principally the Egyptians and Hittites to the west, were sufficiently wealthy and advanced to field forces of these relatively expensive weapons. The elites of these cultures hunted from chariots and archery skill was prized. Surrounding barbarians were intimidated by the fast and accurate archers until they learned how to kill the horses or otherwise disable the team. Egypt's chariots were so light that two men could bear them across a stream, and the chariot corps was supported logistically by mobile repair stations. Around 1200 BC, chariot archers largely disappeared and barbarians, whose origin remains unknown today, overran the cultures that used them.|In-game compendium}} |

{{Quote|The predominate Greek soldier of antiquity was the Hoplite, named after the great round shield he carried into battle. Hoplites wore helmets, leg armor, and chest armor, and carried a great long spear. They fought in dense columns with the spear points from several ranks projecting out from the formation. They thus presented a formidable block bristling with spears held above the shoulder. In battle they would close with the enemy as a pushing wall of shields, stabbing with their spears over the shields. Men behind would push those in front and stab over them. This fighting was face-to-face and terrifying, requiring high skill and discipline. Battles were usually short but deadly. Before the rise of the Hoplite, most army fighting had been more long-range archery and posturing. The Greeks made war personal and intense, and Hoplites dominated ancient battlefields for centuries.|In-game compendium}} |

* There is an undocumented "Medium Chariots" upgrade (automatically granted after advancing to Heroic Age), which increases attack and hit points by 10%. In standard games, this is not observable, as Chariot Archers are not available to train before the Heroic Age. |
* The Hoplite went through a few design changes throughout the development. Originally, they would wear linothorax armor in their Champion upgrade. |
* Hoplites were also to use square shields, inspired by the Mycenaeans tower shields, some months before release. However, Ensemble Studios decided to revert back to them using Hoplon-type shields, most likely because they were more distinctive. |
