Infantry. Good against cavalry.
The Hoplite is a Greek infantry unit trained at the Military Academy from the Classical Age. Hoplites are the standard infantry for the Greeks and usually form the backbone of their army.

The Murmillo (plural: Murmillones) is the primary Atlantean infantry unit. They are very similar to Greek Hoplites in most ways, though they are a little faster.
Like other basic infantry units, Hoplites are a soft counter against cavalry and as such supposed to be cost-effective against most cavalry units. Heavier cavalry such as War Elephants and Jarls require hard counter units to be cost-effectively defeated.

Murmillones are fairly well-rounded as they are strong against both cavalry and weaker infantry units. However, they have poor pierce armor and will fall easily to a squad of Arci. Counter-infantry such as the Hypaspist will also destroy them with ease.
Hoplites are best used to counter cavalry units. However, in a skirmish, most cavalry units will simply be able to run away from them. Hoplites are quite versatile as they can defeat most other infantry units. However, like all infantry they are vulnerable to counter-infantry and ranged soldiers (except for Turmae).

The Murmillo is not a specialized unit. They are not particularly fast, though they do have a good line of sight, and can be trained quickly and in large numbers. One Murmillo can be used to scout up ahead if Contarii are not available. However the Murmillo is superior to the Contarius in that they can be deployed in large numbers. As with all Atlantean units they can be upgraded to Heroes to make them good against myth units and secure Relics.
Hoplites are well armored, and, of the four standard infantry units, they have the most hit points - far more than the Spearman and Berserk. However, they are also the most expensive, slowest, and have the longest training time. This makes rushing with them more difficult, except for Zeus players, whose Hoplites move faster and do extra damage to buildings.

Like all Atlantean human units, a Murmillo can be converted into a Hero at any time, provided the player has sufficient resources. It is classified as both a hero and an infantry.

History
History
Trivia
Trivia
* Both the regular and the hero Murmillo in Retold are armed with a parazonium dagger.
* The Hoplite went through a few design changes throughout the development. Originally, they would wear linothorax armor in their Champion upgrade.
* Hoplites were also to use square shields, inspired by the Mycenaeans tower shields, some months before release. However, Ensemble Studios decided to revert back to them using Hoplon-type shields, most likely because they were more distinctive.

"Infantry. Good against cavalry."
In-game description

The Murmillo (plural: Murmillones) is the primary Atlantean infantry unit. They are very similar to Greek Hoplites in most ways, though they are a little faster.

Like other basic infantry units, Murmillones are a soft counter against cavalry and as such supposed to be cost-effective against most cavalry units. Heavier cavalry such as War Elephants and Jarls require hard counter units to be cost-effectively defeated.

Gameplay

Murmillones are fairly well-rounded as they are strong against both cavalry and weaker infantry units. However, they have poor pierce armor and will fall easily to a squad of Arci. Counter-infantry such as the Hypaspist will also destroy them with ease.

History

"Atlantean warriors and soldiers were known for their discipline and drill. A Murmillo, or fish, because their shining, finned helmets made their complex movements in combat look like a school of swimming fish. They have a rivalry with and respect for the Destroyers, who consider the Murmillo beneath them - as a fisherman would a fish."
