"Constructing a Wonder advances you to the Wonder Age, where the Gods will reward you with great world ending power."
In-game description

The Wonder is a special building in Age of Mythology. It is a magnificent monument that advances players to the Wonder Age. Wonders are extremely expensive and take very long to construct. Its construction can be sped up with a Pharaoh or Priest empowering it.

Unlike in previous installments, a completed enemy Wonder in Age of Mythology only reveals its location, not the area around it, and it remains hidden in the fog of war. Wonders are represented on the minimap as a yellow star icon.

There exists a nearly-identical, unconstructible version called Wonder (Atlantis) which appears in several campaign scenarios. Its statistics are identical to those of the standard Wonder, but owning one does not start a victory countdown for the owning player.

Before Retold, the Wonder provided another means to victory in Supremacy mode, as a 10-minute countdown started which continued as long as the Wonder stood. At the end of the countdown, the player and their team were declared victorious.

Special Ability

Wonder Age (Passive): The effects of attaining this Age, and as long as the Wonder remains standing, are:

  • A trickle of 1 favor per second.
  • Rechargeable god powers cost -75% favor and their cooldown is reduced by -75%.
  • Myth units, including Titans, have +100% attack, +100% hit points, +100% healing rate, and +20% movement speed. It also makes myth units larger in appearance.
  • Heroes (except for the Atlanteans) have +20% attack and +25% hit points.
  • The Titan Gate can be rebuilt. The Titan Gate god power can be recast after 10 in-game minutes since the last cast.

Gameplay

In Retold, the Wonder helps in finishing games rather than being a game finisher itself. When the player advances to the Wonder Age, their myth units become significantly stronger, they can summon multiple Titans, and their god powers can be recast cheaper and with more frequency. It also provides the player with a trickle of 1 favor per second. They can also be empowered to increase their construction speed and favor generation.

History

"A distinguishing cultural characteristic of the great civilizations was architecture. Buildings in all parts of the world looked quite different and employed different construction techniques. In many cases, particularly noteworthy buildings stood as icons for the building civilization, marking it for all time as a culture that achieved greatness, if only temporarily. Examples of such cultural icons are the Pyramids at Giza and the Parthenon at Athens."

Trivia

  • Including the Lighthouse of Alexandria, 4 out of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World are in the game.
  • The Colossus of Rhodes, while not in the game, does have a reference with the inclusion of the Colossus myth unit.
  • Originally, the Egyptian Wonder was based on the Egyptian Grand Temple Complex of Isis at Philae, before the Great Sphinx was used. The Egyptian Grand Temple Complex of Isis was also originally planned to be her unique Wonder.
  • Originally, Wonders were planned to be unique by civilization rather than by god.
  • Odin's Wonder is identical in appearance to the Tower of Odin.
  • In the original game, on any game type (Supremacy, Conquest, etc.), the following characteristics can be observed with the AI whenever a Wonder has been built in a game:
    • Allied AI (including the AI who built the Wonder) will surround the Wonder with their armies.
    • Enemy AI will send all of their forces to the Wonder to destroy it. As soon as a unit is trained from a military building, the AI will assign the unit to immediately head for the Wonder, resulting in an unorganized army.
