"Trireme hero. Good against myth units. Can transport units."
In-game description

The Argo is a Greek hero archer ship available to worshipers of Aphrodite. It is spawned at the Dock in the Heroic Age after researching Argonauts, and can be trained again if destroyed. It is the only heroic ship in the game.

The Argo has different attributes in the earlier Ages, but it automatically gains buffs to attack and hit points with every Age up.

Before Retold, it gained +10% hit points in each of the Classical/Heroic/Mythic Ages, as well as +1 attack in the Heroic Age and another +1 in the Mythic Age. Hence, it started with +20% hit points and +1 attack by default when first produced in the Heroic Age. While it appeared as and was affected by technologies benefiting archer ships, it itself was not one. Therefore, the Argo did not receive increased damage from Kebenits with Funeral Barge.

Gameplay

As with all heroes, The Argo is strongest against myth units. It is ranged so it can fire arrows at enemies from a distance. As the only naval hero in the game, The Argo is crucial in combating naval myth units like the Kraken, as the latter can otherwise periodically sink regular warships instantly due to its special ability. In other regards, The Argo functions as an archer ship, making it strong against close-combat ships, but weak against siege ships. The Argo can also be sunk by shore defenses and siege weapons.

Mythology

"The Argo ("swift sailing") was a ship built by Argos of Thessaly out of beech trees from Mount Pelion. Athena aided in the construction herself. Jason and the other Argonauts sailed on the Argo in their quest for the Golden Fleece. It was the largest ship ever built, with a full fifty oars, one for each of the Argonauts. Athena fitted the bow with a figurehead of lumber cut from her sacred oaks at Dodona that could speak and had the gift of prophecy.

Some of the Argonauts included:

• Jason, the captain
• Atalanta of Arcadia, the virgin huntress
• Calais, the winged son of Boreas
• Heracles, the strongest man in Greece
• Peleus the Myrmidon, Achilles' father
• Orpheus, the Thracian bard
• Castor and Pollux, the Spartan Dioscuri
• Nauplius the Argive, son of Poseidon and a great navigator

• And that most famous of Greek heroes, Butes of Athens, the bee-master"

Trivia

  • During the Alpha, what would later become The Argo's model was much larger, and used for the Trireme. The model was made smaller, and reused for The Argo, for unknown reasons.
  • Unlike most hero units, The Argo cannot pick up Relics (even if they are close to the water).
  • Jason is most famously the captain of The Argo, yet he is only available to Zeus worshippers, who does not have Aphrodite as a minor goddess.
